Air Show in Sunny San Diego

The Centennial of Naval Aviation is being celebrated nationwide throughout 2011 and the kick-off event was held this past weekend in San Diego.   Matt's current ship, the USS John C. Stennis,  was in San Diego to be a part of the celebration.  The highlight was a huge air show on Saturday.

The Stennis had been underway for a month before pulling into San Diego, so Matt was enjoying some well-deserved weekend R&R.

Our friends Ann and Warren were visiting from Washington, D.C. They seemed to be enjoying the sun, too.

The show consisted of both static and airborne aircraft.  Here are some of the ones that were static.

Quite an assortment all in one place.
Next we headed over to the Stennis to view the Parade of Flight.
Matt gave a brief tour of some of the ship's spaces as we headed up to the flight deck.

This is where Matt eats when he is on the ship.  It is prettier than where he sleeps.

From the flight deck, we had a perfect view of where the planes were going to be flying.

And the weather could not have been any better.

The show started with the Navy Leap Frogs parachuting down to the Stennis flight deck.

Then the Navy Blue Angels did a fly-by to kick off the Parade, which featured some 180 vintage and modern- era planes and helicoptors.

The show lasted over 2 hours and we enjoyed seeing all of the planes and helicoptors. The grand finale was the complete air wing of the Stennis flying over in formation.

The show is over.  Our San Diego friends Roland, Ryan, and Peggy complete our group picture.

Have a great week!
